Mogotsi makes it three SA simGT wins in a row, Lindsay-Rae impresses with third
SA simGT Series
Victory at Donington made it three SA simGT wins in a row for Jonathan Mogotsi, a dream start for the new Revlimit Racing Red team.
Mogotsi started his #80 Audi R8 LMS from third position behind AGBSs Gert James. By lap 3 Ichor Racing’s Lance Garassino had built a healthy three second race lead. A tyre on the dirt at The Old Hairpin, by James, and again at the following Turn 5 corner allowed Mogotsi the opportunity to make a decisive dart to the inside line at McLeans to complete the pass at Coppice. After closing the gap to just over 2 seconds, Mogotsi was gifted the race lead when, on lap 4, Garassino spun and hit the barrier at Coppice.
A strong outing for Ichor Racing included an impressive performance by Brent Linday-Rae in the #333 Nissan GTR. Following a stunning qualifying result of fourth, Lindsay-Rae drove a faultless race to find himself as high as second position, before being passed by recovering teammate Garassino at the half way stage of the 26 lapper.
Both the AGBS Nissans of James and Boyd Bryson finished in the top 6, on a track that arguably does not suit the bulky Nissan GTR.
It was a mix of fortune for HRT, as Chris Heyneke enjoyed a solid eighth position finish, while Mark Henebury maintained ninth position until contact with a back-marker dropped him down to 15th overall, he fought his way back to 12th before race end.
Mogotsi drove a faultless race to win by more than 20 seconds ahead of Garassino. Lindsay-Rae made it a double podium result for Ichor Racing.
In the GT-AM Class, HRDs Kevin Lourens took victory ahead of debutants M2 Racing’s Gerrit Crafford and Revlimit Racing Red’s Clifford Needell.
Gabriel Rossouw and Mogotsi are tied leading the Drivers’ Championship with 50 points each, just four points ahead of Garassino. Trigon Racing lead the Teams’ Championship 13 points ahead of Ichor Racing and 21 points ahead of Revlimit Racing Blue.
The next round of the championship will be at Monza on 23 May 2016, and will available for viewing on Sim Race South Africa’s Youtube channel from Friday 20 May 2016 , subscribe here.
