The battle for second in P2 between Smit and Holden-Jones.

AGBS’s Gert James and Topline Racing’s Endhren Govender both took dominant class victories of the 45 lap opening round of the 2016 Project Cars SA simEC Series at the Dubai Autodrome.

In the Prototype Class (P2) James lead teammate Gabriel Rossouw throughout the opening stages, the two AGBS entries proved much faster than the battle for third position between Transglobal Racing’s Gerdus Smit and H-J eSports’ Jason Holden-Jones. Just when he looked to challenge James for the overall race lead, Rossouw suffered a technical set-back and was forced to retire from the race. With just two laps remaining, Holden-Jones capatilised on an error from Smit which allowed him to slip by and maintain second position to the end.

James won the P2 class race finishing an astonishing two laps ahead of Holden-Jones and Smit.

Govender takes the GTD lead from Browne on lap 4.

In the GT Daytona Class (GTD) a thrilling opening stage battle was seen between Topline Racing teammates Chris Browne (Ruf RT-8) and Endhren Govender (BMW M3 GT3). After Browne went wide under-braking for Turn 10 on lap four, Govender used a better drive to pass Browne around the outside at Turn 11. Browne went on to further drop down to fifth position behind Giom Mouton (BMW Z4 GT3) after an error, defending from TASAR’s Bongi Mabhida (Audi R8 LMS Ultra), spun him around.

Govender convincingly won GTD with a substantial margin back to Mabhida and Browne.

Round 2 will take place at Bathurst on 25 April 2016.
