Jonathan Mogotsi (#80 Raging Bull Motorsports Mercedes-Benz) and Jason Absmeier (#90 Revlimit Racing Nissan) shared the opening round overall victories at Donington. The opening round comprised of a double race sprint format of 18 laps each.
Mogotsi, on SA simGT debut, started race one well from third position to chase the 13 lap long race lead battle between Basheer Jadwat (#83 Squadro GhostworX BMW) and Gert James (#102 AGBS Nissan). Lap 14 would see Jadwat and James slow after making contact at The Old Hairpin, this allowed Mogotsi to thread his way through into the race lead. Mogotsi maintained position ahead of the Jadwat/James fight to take his maiden SA simGT win.
James’ overall third position also earned him victory of the AM-Class, Brent Lindsay-Rae (BroZ Racing BMW) claimed second position and Steve Smith (Kinell Racing BMW) third position.
After a difficult race one Absmeier proved eager to make amends in race two. Absmeier timed the rolling start to perfection to outgun pole-man James into the opening corner. Other than a late surge from James, Absmeier was left unchallenged to secure his first win of the new season. Mogotsi added to his race one success by finishing on the final step of the podium.
In the AM-Class, James made it a double victory for the day. Jacques de Villiers (#26 Rebel GhostworX Nissan) enjoyed a solid race to claim second position while Steve Smith again was able add to his collection of podium finishes.
