GTE Round 5: Patient Absmeier earns victory at Monza

The fifth and penultimate round of the 2015.1 SA simGT Endurance series was won by Jason Absmeier driving the #90 Revlimit Racing BMW M3.

Difficult starts for both the fastest man in qualifying, Peter van Vuuren (#15 Trigon Racing Ferrari), and Markus Steyn (#35 Shadow GhostworX Ferrari) allowed Absmeier to snatch the race lead before the opening corner.

During the opening stages, a notable lack of pace for Absmeier saw him fall back to fourth position after Steyn, van Vuuren and Johannes Coetsee (#46 Shadow GhostworX Ferrari) fought their way past. Later a clear strategic play by Absmeier would unfold.

After winning a hotly contested battle with Steyn for the race lead , van Vuuren was forced into an unscheduled pit-stop to see him rejoin two laps behind the race leader. Later van Vuuren retired his Ferrari from the race. Nazeem Edwards (#26 Nexus Racing BMW) enjoyed a good battle with Gerdus Smit (#51 Trigon Racing Ferrari) for sixth position until he was forced into retirement as well.

Steyn elected to pit during the half way stage of the race, essentially splitting his race into two equal stints. Absmeier went for a much longer first stint which explained his situation at the beginning, a heavy fuel load made him a soft target during the start.

With just eight laps remaining, Absmeier finally conducted his pit-stop to emerge just three seconds behind race leader Steyn. Absmeier’s long first stint allowed him to use the super-soft tyre option for the remainder of the race.

Absmeier used his strategy advantage to easily close the gap to Steyn and finally pass him under braking for Roggio to earn him victory. Jason Holden-Jones (#22 H-J Motorsport) won his race long battle with Coetsee and Smit to finish in third position.

Driver quotes:

Jason Absmeier (#90 Revlimit Racing BMW M3):

“What an epic race I had! Great start off the line, then struggled to keep position, then i had a great dice with Johannes. Great driving man, you kept me on my toes all the way. I waited for Markus to pit and calculated when I should pit every lap after he pitted until I decided to pit. Then Markus passed me and I caught him quickly. Had to fight to get pass though. Was worth it! Thanks guys!”

Johannes Coetsee (#46 Shadow GhostworX):

“Had a very enjoyable 9 laps on softs and was able to keep up with the front runners. On lap 9 I dived into pits for mediums. This was the strategy. Did not work out haha. But those 9 laps was epic! Great running all round from everyone!”
