GT Sprint Race 1 Round 1: Jadwat wins Silverstone season opener

Basheer Jadwat (Squadro GhostworX) wasted no time in defending his 2014.2 driver’s championship title by winning race 1 of the 2015.1 SA simGT Sprint round at Silverstone.

A very late braking move by Jadwat into Village Corner (turn 3) saw him quickly dismantle the lead from pole-starter Jonathan Bentz (Squadro GhostworX). After an error at The Loop (turn 4) debutant Mark Henebury (HRT) fell back from 4th position to rejoin and pass Marius van Wyk (Deltec Racing Team) around the outside line at the high-speed Maggots Corner (turn 10):

Errors by Boyd Bryson (Xtreme Racing) and Chris Browne (Shadow GhostworX) elevated debutant Chris Heyneke (HRT) to 3rd position, with a dangerous looking Markus Steyn (Shadow GhostworX) in close quarters.

Browne, Heyneke and Steyn three-wide into Abbey.

Browne, Heyneke and Steyn three-wide into Abbey.

Then on lap 7 a wide running Heyneke at Stowe Corner (turn 16) allowed Steyn to slip through briefly before a very impressive out braking “around the outside” move saw Heyneke re-claim 3rd at the following corner. Browne soon caught up to the Heyneke-Steyn battle to run three-wide with them into Abbey (turn 1). The Heyneke-Steyn and now Browne battle attracted Bryson and Henebury with all 5 cars running extremely close together through Village Corner. Steyn manage to escape in 3rd, however it was Henebury who profited from the close racing to move three places up to 4th.

After his early move on Bentz for the lead, Jadwat was left relatively unchallenged to claim the first victory of the new season.

“My start was pretty poor and I had Bash all over me from the first turn!!! In turn 3 he made a braking pass on me and I settled in behind him slightly concerned by a very fast Boyd in his Red and White Z4 behind me. Everytime I made any progress on Bash I’d battle with severe loss of grip and would run wide or have moments which saw him pull a gap again. We traded mistakes for the first 6 laps as we gapped Boyd who had some problems of his own. From Lap 7 Bash and myself settled into a rhythm and we started dropping the times. I had one more big moment which saw me drop 2.5 seconds off Bash and we maintained that to the line.” says Bentz
