SAGT: Round 5 Race 1: Dafel secures maiden simGT win

Jade Dafel (Nexus Racing) won Race 1 of the SA simGT round at Silverstone.

Exciting move by Hume saw him move up to 6th position.

The start saw the Squadro GhostworX BMW’s of Basheer Jadwat and Jonathan Bentz maintain their positions at the front throughout the opening lap. The two swopped positions when, on lap 2, Jadwat ran wide at Arena.

An exciting move was seen by Craig Hume (Hippo Rock Racing) who was able to make a pass around the outside of Nazeem Edwards (Nexus Racing) at Brooklands  for 6th position.

A struggling Jadwat again ran wide at Stowe this time allowing both Juan Liebenberg (Team Ryoku) and Dafel  through into 2nd and 3rd position. Bentz immediately found himself under pressure form a determined Liebenberg, Liebenberg by then had done very well to keep a hard charging Dafel behind him while setting off after race leader Bentz.

Mid-field was hotly contested.

Mid-field was hotly contested.

By lap 2 a frantic battle between Quintin Haarhoff (Taurus Racing), Nazeem Edwards (Nexus Racing), Yasteel Ragubeer (Team Ryoku)  had developed for 7th position. Ragubeer later ran wide and fell back leaving Haarhoof and Edwards to fight it out. Edward’s BMW was all over the rear of Haarhoff’s Mercedes-Benz until a move by Edwards at Arena resulted in contact between the two. Edwards fell back, Haarhoff maintained position just ahead of a quick looking Johannes Coetsee (GhostworX 3.0) who in turn brought along Dean Rautenbach (Hippo Rock Racing), Marius van Wyk (Deltec Racing) and a recovering Edwards to the fight. It was a great collection of overtaking and defensive moves throughout the mid field.

On lap 3 Dafel was promoted to 2nd position when Liebenberg used too much curve on the exit of Copse which forced his BMW into a high speed half spin on its way to contact with the inside barrier. Dafel now in a position to challenge for victory immediately used his extra pace on hand to lock onto Bentz. The increased pressure sustained from Dafel forced Bentz into a braking error at Arena on lap 3, Bentz ran wide which compromised his entry onto the following straight. Dafel then used his better drive to pull alongside Bentz and pass him under braking for Brooklands.

Dafel went on the win his first race of the season, ahead of 2nd and 3rd place finishers Jadwat and Chris Browne (GhostworX 3.0).

“Knew this race would be a tough one so I decided to keep consistent and try stay with the front runners hoping errors would occur, and thankfully this strategy paid off. First was Bash running wide allowing Juan and I to squeeze past. Next up was Juan who had a disagreement with the rumble strip sending him in a drift..hehe laughed at that one dude. Then began to pursue Jono who had excellent pace but sadly also ran wide at Village giving me the lead. I knew he had the pace to catch me so I just put my head down and hoped I could hold it untill the end. By the last lap Jono had reeled me in and attached his tow hook, I was prepared for a defensive finish. Coming to the end of Wellington Straight I noticed a flicker in my mirror and Jono was off in the litter…LAG had attacked him..sorry Bro, think we couldve had an exciting finish if this never happened. And so I took home my first WIN!!! Stoked!!” says Dafel
