Denis Mitchell (SH Racing) won race 2 of the Vallelunga round of the SA simGT Series.
A good start by pole-sitter Mitchell saw him maintain his lead only to Tormantino (turn 6) when Basheer Jadwat (Squadro GhostworX) managed to slip by. The following lap saw Mitchell respond with a lunge up the up the outside line around Jadwat at Cimini Uno (turn 1), the move proved unsuccessful as Mitchell out-braked himself allowing Jadwat back through to the lead and Jonathan Bentz (Squadro GhostworX) to close up to him.
In the meantime the scrap between the front 3 allowed 3 more drivers to join Jadwat train, namely Chris Browne (GhostworX 3.0), Markus Steyn (Rebel GhostworX) and Craig Hume (Hippo Rock Racing).
Mitchell again dropped a position when he went wide on the main straight to slow enough to see Bentz fly passed into 2nd. Mitchell now suffering 2 setbacks, one would think he would not have a shot at a comeback for victory, however he settled down and launched an assault on the two leading Squadro GhostworX cars. With a better exit out of the back straight Mitchell passed Bentz on the approach to Campagnano (turn 2) and then set-off to chase down Jadwat who by then was enjoying a healthy lead of around 3 seconds.
With just 3 laps remaining, at Cimini Uno, Mitchell put a classic inside line out-braking move on Jadwat to take the lead of the race and to go on to make it a double victory at Vallelunga.
“What a race…what more can be said other than big respect to the guys! My car felt very different in race 2..i got a decent start but my tires were sliding way more than in race 1…so not long in i think i was down to 4th, or 3rd…hell the rush has scrambled my brain already lol! After a few laps thankfully the car started to grip enough and i was able to start fighting back! Jonathan made it real hard to pass but i was able to make a pass stick, then set out after Basheer. When i caught i was all over him but trying to pass someone so close in times is real hard and to make it clean is another story! We had some epic laps real close till eventually i was able to make a hard and i hope fair pass on Basheer. Then we were side by side till i was placed beautiful for a right hand hair pin and from there with just over a lap to go was able to hold on to win!
What a stunning race, massive congrats to Basheer on a excellent dice, as well as Jonathan! Really exciting races and excited to see other guys finding some hot pace…like Chris, nice improvements there Chris!” says Mitchell
“Race 2 – I did a PB by a considerable margin in qualifying and with almost half the session remaining realised I wasn’t going to top that so i took a few mins break . I got a cracking start this time and was able to run with Denis and Bash to Cimini1 but Jono got me there and the top 3 started to pull away while I was taking a bit of pressure from Markus behind. The Denis/Bash/Jono battle slowed them enough to allow me to close again and at one point I was right behind Denis – the reality is that I was using all of my abilities just to stay with him with nothing left to even think of a pass, hehe. Denis then got past Jono and I was now able to keep the gap quite steady to the Squadro car. As the race went on my pace compared to Jono seemed to improve and in the last couple of laps I definitely had a bit more grip than him – I was trying everything I could to force a small mistake but he was having none of it and he deservedly took the last podium spot – Thanks man, another great race.” says Browne
