SAGT Round 2 Race 1: Jadwat wins inter-team duel for victory, Dafel impresses on debut

An early  error by Basheer Jadwat (Sqaudro GhostworX), during Race 1 of Round 6 of the 2014.2 SA simGT Series, allowed teammate Jonathan Bentz to lead up to the half way stage of the race. Jadwat, after pressing Bentz for multiple laps , passed Bentz using an outside line entering the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Jadwat was then able to extend his gap back to Bentz to win his 2nd race of the season.

Dafel, on debut, finished on the podium.

A better start off the lights for Bentz saw pole-sitter Jadwat immediately move across the track to assume a defensive position into Yokohama Corner (turn1). Bentz responded by moving tothe opposite part of the track in the hopes of achieving a slig-shot run next to Jadwat on the run into the Mercedes-Benz Arena, this was not to be and Jadat maintained his lead on lap 1. One could sense it was not over as Bentz seemed to be harnessing extra pace and using it to apply pressure to Jadwat.

Debutant Jade Dafel (Nexus Racing) impressed the field by achieving a 3rd place starting position, it must be said with more testing time and experience Dafel is an exciting prospect for the series. Dafel handled his start to the race very well as he fended off a curious ‘look see’ move by Juan Liebenberg (Team Ryoku) under-braking for the opening corner to maintain his 3rd position to the end of the race. Chris Browne (GhostworX 3.0) was sublime under-braking for the opening corner to pass Boyd Bryson (Xtreme Racing) to move up to 4th.

Daring move by Liebenberg on Steyn.

Daring move by Liebenberg on Steyn for 6th.

An opening lap technical difficulty dropped Liebenberg down to 7th behind Markus Steyn (Rebel GhostworX). The two drivers were locked in battle until Liebenberg capatilised on an error by Steyn which saw him run wide at Turn 10, Liebenberg with greater corner speed was able to complete the daring pass using an outside line at the following high speed Warsteiner-Kurve. Also on debut was Nazeem Edwards (Nexus Racing) who show good initial pace to stay in contact with the Liebenberg/Steyn battle for 6th.

A dramatic end to the race for Browne saw him leave the the track at the Warsteiner-Kurve to return in an uncontrollable manner to tag Bryson’s BMW forcing both cars into high speed spins. Bryson was able to recover to finish the race in 6th position however.
