SS3 Round 5 Race 1: Jadwat fights back to victory
After a brilliant comeback from 5th position Basheer Jadwat (Squadro GhostworX) won the first race of Round 5 of the South African simSS3 Series at Silverstone.
Jadwat started the race on pole position alongside a very determined looking Willem van Zyl (JVR GhostworX). The start of the race saw Jadwat maintain his lead through Abbey however not past Village corner. Denis Mitchell (SH Racing) unfortunately tagged the rear of Jadwat’s car. Mitchell later penalised himself by conducting a voluntary drive through for the incident.
On the opening lap Quintin Haarhoff (Taurus Rcaing) braked too late to run into the rear of Juan Liebenberg’s (Team Ryoku) car which caused a chain reaction of incidents involving 8 cars.
Over the next 3 laps Jadwat managed to find his way past; Jason Absmeier (Revlimit Racing) who ran wide at Village corner, Johannes Coetsee (JVR Ghostworx) and Steven Pelser who had a half spin exiting the now infamous Village Corner. The next challenge for Jadwat was to chase down race leader van Zyl some 4 seconds up the road.
A riveting 3-way battle for 8th position was seen between between Ken Hunter (Xtreme Racing), Quintin Haarhoff (Taurus Racing) and Chad Cook (SH Racing). Hunter doing well to fend off Haarhoff’s aggressive braking passing attempts, until Haarhoff ran into the back of Hunter ending their battle.
On lap 11 Jadwat, with a better drive out of Club Corner, managed to pass van Zyl through the quick right-handed Abbey corner to re-take the lead of the race.
With just 5 laps remaining the exciting battle between Coetsee, Absmeier and Chris Browne (GhostworX 3.0) came to an abrupt end when Coetsee could not avoid contact with 16th placed man Riaan vd Westhuizen (Taurus Racing), who was caught out during his own battle for position with Cook.
Browne took advantage of the incident to take 3rd position away from an incident avoiding Absmeier, however after just 2 laps Absmeier took advantage of a slight error by Browne who ran wide enough for Absmeier to claim the inside line down Hanger Straight and to emerge from Stowe corner with the last remaining podium position.
Jadwat overcame his opening lap incident to take his 4th win of the season. Willem van Zyl and Jason Absmeier finished on the podium.
