Derrick Mulder won the final race of the 2014 Season 1 South African simGT Challenge.
Mulder, just after the final corner of the formation lap, intelligently bunched the field before catching his competitors napping and sprinting away during the race start. During the opening stages Jonathan Bentz passed Markus Steyn for 2nd and soon after with a superior drive out of Malmesberry corner took the lead from Mulder. Denis Mitchel, after passing Steyn, out braked himself during a passing attempt on Mulder at Cape Town Corner for 2nd position.
A twist to the race saw race leader Bentz into the barriers on the outside the exit of Shell Sweep, falling back to sixth position and gifting the lead back to Mulder. BT Racing’s Björn Buchner, after starting from the back of the field, found himself frantically defending 2nd position from Stefan Kotze, after Steyn and du Plessis went off at Malmesberry Corner. A strong comeback from Bentz saw him pass Büchner for 2nd under braking for Engen Corner. During the closing stages an error by Büchner saw him fall to the back of the field. Büchner’s teammate, Tony Liddell, enjoyed arguably his strongest performance of the season, fighting his way up to 2nd after a 15th place grid start.
Mulder was able to comfortably maintain his lead all the way to the finish line to claim his first win of the season.
